Bossa Nova (New Attitude)

Went to the anti-racist free festival Rise – good to see the enthusiasm of young people handing out leaflets; plus on the flip side police confiscating cannabis off some young black guy. That’s the logic of prohibition for you. The music was pretty so-so, though fun to see the Buzzocks, the so-called Wailers were a bit too much on the reggae-lite side. The best thing was just seeing all the different people.

So my contribution is this Bossa Nova podcast from DJ Gilles Peterson from the series sponsored by Brahma. Its an mp3 around 30mb so it takes a while to download but the interviews are good. Seems in Brazil the favela kids are into hip hop and the middle class kids are into samba, but ‘bossa’ ain’t cool right now.

July 7 remembered

I was on the tube going past Aldgate that morning with Shirley. I noticed some teenagers with smart looking conference bags, with something about peace and conflict resolution written on them. After I finished reading the Metro I past it to the young Muslim woman sitting opposite, and got off the train. Later I heard about the bombing and thought of this moment.

A few days that July I stood outside the General Medical Council in two minutes silence. Today  then I also think of the 250 patients killed by Dr Harold Shipman.
